On Seollal and Chuseok, once the table is cleared, someone reaches for the yut sticks. Four pieces of wood, a mat on the floor, and everybody shouting at once — 윏놀이 is the oldest party game in Korea and still the loudest.

How it plays

  • Throw the four sticks — how they land (do, gae, geol, yut, mo) decides how far you move.
  • Race your markers home — land on an opponent and you send them back to the start.
  • 2 to 4 teams — works with a couple of people or the whole family.
  • Ages 3 and up — the rules take about a minute to learn.
